Bowie right-hander Jimmy Haynes strikes out 16 Harrisburg batters 32 years ago today – the most by an opposing pitcher in Senators’ modern era. ‍

Like the Senators care. They end up using solo homers by Mark Grudzielanek, Tyrone Horne and Mike Hardge to beat Haynes 3-2 and the Baysox on City Island.

Exactly three years to the day later, Izzy Alcantara homers in the Senators’ 1997 regular season finale to give him 27 — breaking the single-season, modern-franchise record previously set in 1993 by Cliff Floyd and Glenn Murray.

Alcantara’s record-setting homer comes in the first inning of a 6-5 victory at Reading – a two-run shot off the Phillies’ Greg Whiteman that travels 404 feet down the left-field line.

The homer for Alcantara to start September comes after he hits nine of them in August.
