Matt Stairs with the Senators in 1991 on City Island

Matt Stairs homers 28 years ago today, marking the fifth straight game in which the onetime Harrisburg Senators infielder hits a home run for the Oakland Athletics.

This homer comes in the second inning of a 14-1 loss at home to the New York Yankees.

Stairs’ drive to deep right field comes on the first pitch of the inning from Yankees starter Orlando Hernandez, whose career coincidentally ends 12 years later in 2010 on the same City Island field where Stairs first stars for Class AA Harrisburg in 1991.
