The great Karl Wallenda takes the scenic route from one side to the other at Philadelphia’s Veterans Stadium 54 years ago today.

The tightrope walk across the top of ballpark comes between games of the Phillies’ doubleheader split against the Montreal Expos.

Total distance: 640 feet.

Total height: 200 feet.

Total safety nets: 0.

Total number of fans holding their collective breath: 30,207.

Wallenda repeats the feat four years later during another Phillies doubleheader in 1976. That time, 51,211 fans will hold their collective breath.
