A little bit Moore

Gene Moore in 1937 with the Boston Braves

Onetime Harrisburg Senators outfielder Gene Moore eventually finds himself smiling after the St. Louis Browns 82 years ago today trade future Hall of Fame catcher Rick Ferrell to the Washington Senators for journeyman catcher Tony Giuliani.

Moore, who plays in the minors for Harrisburg in 1932, becomes part of the deal four weeks later as he is sent from woebegone Washington to St. Louis as compensation after Giuliani refuses to report to the Browns.

Turns out to be a great move for Moore, who joins the 1944 Browns just in time for their one and only appearance in the World Series.

Moore plays another season for the Browns before retiring after the 1945 season, ending a 14-year career in the majors in which he bats .270 while playing in 1,042 games for the Reds, Cardinals, Braves, Dodgers, Washington and, finally, the Browns.
