A monument for the Mick

‍A year after he passes away in August 1995, Mickey Mantle is immortalized 30 years ago today by the New York Yankees, who unveil a monument honoring the Hall of Famer at Yankee Stadium. ‍

The monument is the first in 47 years for the Yankees, who previously have monuments for Hall of Famers Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig and Miller Huggins as well as – at the time – plaques for another 10 players, three owners and a couple of Popes.

As for Mantle, he is known to have both visited the monuments before home games as well as during games throughout his extraordinary career from 1951-68.

Back then, the monuments to Ruth, Gehrig and Huggins are located on the field — in the deepest regions of center field — before they eventually move behind the outfield fence after Yankee Stadium’s renovations are complete in 1976.
