A wild night … and early morning
A single by Philadelphia Phillies closer Mitch Williams in his first and only at-bat of the 1993 season beats the San Diego Padres 6-5 at Veterans Stadium 33 years ago today.
Williams’ hit – a one-out, line-drive single to left off future Hall of Famer Trevor Hoffman that scores Pete Incaviglia from second base – comes in the second game of a doubleheader that has multiple rain delays in the first game, which the Padres win 5-2.
The second game, before the remnants from a Friday night crowd of 54,617 in South Philly, does not even start until 1:26 a.m.
As for Williams, he never again comes to bat in the majors during an 11-year career that includes only 17 plate appearances.
