Shorty Miller, right, runs for his life during a 1912 game against Penn

Today marks what would have been Shorty Miller’s 135th birthday.

The Harrisburg-born Miller in 1910 becomes the first true freshman to start at quarterback in a season opener for Penn State as he leads the Nittany Lions to a 58-0 victory over the Harrisburg Athletic Club at Beaver Field.

Miller holds that distinction at Penn State for 100 years until Rob Bolden starts the 2010 season opener and leads the Lions over Youngstown State 44-14.

Miller finishes his collegiate career with a record of 21-2-2, including an 8-0 record in 1912.
