And now for a little football

The answer finally comes 24 years ago today to the then-seemingly ageless question of who would last longer – Penn State football coach Joe Paterno or Harrisburg Patriot-News sportswriter Ronnie Christ.

Turns out Ronnie, seen here in Beaver Stadium’s press box during the 1973 season, decides to get out first after spending 33 years covering Paterno’s Nittany Lions.

Alas for Ronnie, whose Decembers never are quite complete without a bowl game to cover, the Lions lose 24 years ago today at Virginia to finish the 2001 season 5-6 and out of the bowl picture for the second straight year.

Ronnie’s final totals: 405 Penn State games covered, 405 deadlines beaten, countless memories forever captured in the millions of words he penned.
