And the Oscar goes to … Pittsburgh

This season marks the 94th anniversary of future Hall of Famer Oscar Charleston taking over the Pittsburgh Crawfords as a player-manager.

Charleston is blessed with a Crawfords roster that historians consider the best in Negro League history.

Charleston is seen here in 1932 talking with, from left, Rap Dixon, who plays alongside Charleston in Harrisburg’s vaunted outfield of the 1920s; catcher Josh Gibson; and infielders Judy Johnson and Jud Wilson.

All but Dixon eventually reach the Hall of Fame, and he just misses out during the 2006 voting of former Black players, managers and executives.

As if those five are not enough, the Crawfords’ roster that season also includes future Hall of Fame pitcher Satchel Paige and catcher Ted “Double Duty” Ratcliffe.
