Another team, another homer

Renown fastball crusher Matt Stairs, seen here in 1991 with the Class AA Harrisburg Senators, launches a 2-2 pitch from Ian Snell deep over the right-field wall at Seattle’s Safeco Field 15 years ago today as the San Diego Padres beat the Mariners 2-1.

The homer before a Saturday night crowd of 28,670 is the first of Stairs’ six in 2010 for the Padres in 2010 – and marks the 11th different team for which Stairs homers, tying the major league record set by Todd Zeile.

Stairs breaks that record in 2011 after he joins the Washington Nationals.

Stairs eventually spends 19 seasons in the major leagues, where he becomes one of the game’s all-time best pinch-hitters.

He finishes his career with 265 homers with 23 of them coming as a pinch-hitter, a major league record

Stairs’ only postseason pinch-hit homer comes in 2008 and helps lift the Philadelphia Phillies into the World Series.
