Benjamin Harrison takes in a ballgame

While his time in the White House mostly is forgotten by now, Benjamin Harrison makes a bit of history 133 years ago today as he becomes the first president to attend a major league game.

Historians note that Harrison, the 23rd president, watches the Washington Senators lose at home to the Cincinnati Reds 7-4 before a Monday afternoon crowd of 1,697 at Boundary Field, where Howard University Hospital now sits.

Historians also note that among Harrison’s accomplishments during his four-year administration is the development of the Sherman Antitrust Act.

Ironically, Major League Baseball spends the last century-plus clinging to its exemption from that law, which is designed to prevent monopolies.
