Harrisburg’s Jimmy Jones makes history 56 years ago today as the first Black quarterback to appear on the cover of Sports Illustrated.

The magazine recognizes the former John Harris High star after he opens the 1969 college football season nine days earlier by leading the University of Southern Cal to a stunning 31-21 victory at Nebraska.

Jones goes on to star at Southern Cal for three years, and leads the Trojans to a 22-8-3 record and three Rose Bowl appearances.
