Five swings, 20 RBIs

Jose Vidro

Jose Vidro hits the first of his three career grand slams in the majors 26 years ago today, leading the Montreal Expos over the San Diego Padres 8-0 at before a Monday night crowd of 7,545 at Olympic Stadium.

Vidro’s slam also is one of a major league-record five hit on the same day with the others coming from Seattle’s Jay Buhner, Florida’s Mike Lowell, St. Louis’ Fernando Tatis Sr. and the New York Yankees’ Bernie Williams.

Vidro’s sixth-inning slam off the Padres’ Carlos Almanzar breaks open the game and all but clinches the first victory in the majors for Jeremy Powell, who like Vidro is a graduate of the Expos’ prized Class AA affiliate in Harrisburg.

Vidro’s two other grand slams come off the Philadelphia Phillies’ Hector Mercado in 2002 and the Mets’ Tom Glavine in 2003.

Vidro especially enjoys tormenting Glavine, the Hall of Famer against whom Vidro hits four of his 128 career homers.
