Going to Kansas City

A Tuesday afternoon crowd of 32,147 leaves Kansas City’s Municipal Stadium 71 years ago today after the Athletics’ first game there since their move from Philadelphia after the 1954 season.

The relocated A’s open the 1955 season at home with a 6-2 victory over the Detroit Tigers.

The rest of the 1955 season, though, does not go as well on the field with the A’s finishing with a 63-91 record and 33 games behind the American League pennant-winning New York Yankees.

They do, however, quite well at the box office, drawing nearly 1.4 million fans – trailing only the Yankees’ 1.5 million fans for the most in the American League and third only to the Milwaukee Braves’ major league-leading 2 million fans.
