Hometown heroes
Billy Myers
Billy Myers, the shortstop out of Enola, Pa., who spends seven seasons in the major leagues for the Cincinnati Reds and Chicago Cubs, plays his final game as a pro 84 years ago today.
Al Chambers
Myers plays second base for the Cubs and goes 0-for-3 in their 6-0 loss to, coincidentally, the Reds at Crosley Field.
Exactly 44 years later in 1985, Harrisburg-born Al Chambers plays his final game in the majors in the Seattle Mariners’ 5-4 loss at home to the Kansas City Royals.
Facing 1985 Cy Young Award winner Bret Saberhagen, Chambers flies out to left field as a pinch-hitter in the seventh inning.
Chambers, the onetime Harrisburg High star and the top overall pick in baseball’s 1979 amateur draft, plays another two seasons in the minors before retiring.
