Reading Keystoners outfielder George Quellich collects his pro baseball-record 15th straight hit 96 years ago today – one hit better than the remarkable run also in the summer of 1929 by onetime Harrisburg Giants outfielder Rap Dixon, then with the Baltimore Black Sox.

Quellich’s streak is stopped by Montreal Royals right-hander and longtime major leaguer Elam Vangilder on a flyout.

Quellich, a mainstay for Reading's International League team from 1927-33, briefly plays in the majors for the Detroit Tigers in 1931, picking up 12 hits in 54 at-bats before drifting back to the minors.

Alas, because of the segregation that at the time permeates the game, Dixon – despite his .336 career batting average in the Negro Leagues – never reaches the majors.
