The first Little League World Series in 1947
The first Little League World Series game is played 79 years ago today in Williamsport, Pa.
The Maynard Midgets – a team from Williamsport – eventually wins the eight-team, three-day tournament, beating Lock Haven in the championship game.
At the time, the event goes by the name of the National Little League Tournament before formally changing in 1949 to the more familiar Little League World Series.
The first tournament in 1947 features seven teams from Pennsylvania and one from New Jersey.
And, no, there is no wall-to-wall television coverage, mostly because ESPN does not exist back then.
