Not the best investment
To those lamenting the Philadelphia Phillies once giving out dead-money contracts as if they are Pez candies on Halloween, consider this tale of wasted money as the Phillies 29 years ago today sign Danny Tartabull, a free agent outfielder coming off a 27-homer season with the Chicago White Sox.
Tartabull ends up breaking his right foot in the first week of the regular season, plays only three games for the Phillies – going 0-for-7, thank you, with four walks – and then sits out the rest of the summer before retiring at the age of 34.
For this, Tartabull is paid $2 million.
