Willie Mays hits the 660th and final home run of his Hall of Fame career 52 years ago today at New York’s Shea Stadium.

Mays, playing with the Mets in his final season, hits his last homer off Cincinnati left-hander Don Gullett, a fourth-inning drive to right-center that gives the Mets a 1-0 lead in a game the Reds eventually win 2-1 in 10 innings before a Friday night crowd of 36,803 at Shea.

The homer is the second of two that Mays hits in his career off the hard-throwing Gullett.

The homer also is Mays’ 14th in a season-plus with the Mets. The first 646 come during Mays’ first 21-plus seasons of his Hall of Fame career with the Giants.
