Jennifer Pawol four years ago tonight became the first woman to umpire a professional baseball game in City Island’s 133-year history as she works third base in the Harrisburg Senators’ 2-0 loss to the Richmond Flying Squirrels.
Pawol certainly knows her way around a ballfield after playing collegiate softball at Hofstra from 1996-98.
She begins umpiring school in 2016 and exclusively works in the minors until Aug. 9, 2025, when she becomes the first woman to umpire a regular-season game in the majors.
Pawol goes on to umpire 17 more major league games, including six behind the plate, in 2025 before returning this season to the minors. with an occasional return to the majors.
