Perfect no more

The perfect 13-0 start for Reds pitcher Brooks Lawrence comes to an end 69 years ago today at Cincinnati's Crosley Field as the Pirates beat him 4-3 on Roberto Clemente’s three-run homer in the top of the ninth inning.

Lawrence, who in 1951 becomes the first Black player in the Harrisburg Senators’ storied history in the minor leagues, goes on to finish the 1956 season 19-10 – the best summer in his seven-year career in the majors that begins in 1954.
