Remembering Charles Albert Bender

Charles Albert “Chief” Bender, whose Hall of Fame pitching career begins on Harrisburg’s City Island in 1902, is born 141 years ago today in Crow Wing County, Minnesota.

Bender is only a few weeks removed from his 18th birthday and graduation from the Carlisle Indian School when he joins the semipro Harrisburg Athletic Club on June 7, 1902.

Ten days later, he starts against the Chicago Cubs, known then as the Orphans, in an exhibition game on City Island, known then as Hargast Island.

Among those watching that day is Connie Mack, the manager of the Philadelphia Athletics who eventually signs Bender for $300 per month.

Bender goes on to win 193 games for the A’s over the next 12 years.
