Remembering Elbie Fletcher
No one can say that onetime Harrisburg Senators first baseman Elbie Fletcher is not prepared for his at-bats in the major leagues.
Fletcher, seen here in a Boston Herald photo after joining the Braves in the mid-1930s, is the youngest position player ever to summer on Harrisburg's City Island.
Fletcher is just a few weeks past his 18th birthday when he joins the Senators in 1934.
He bats .291 in 82 games for the Senators before making his major league debut later that season.
Fletcher, who passes away 32 years ago today, also becomes the first former Harrisburg player to start in a major league All-Star Game when he represents the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 1943 midsummer classic at Philadelphia's Shibe Park.
That All-Star Game also is the first to be played at night.
