Remembering Jimmy Sebring

Jimmy Sebring, the former Bucknell University outfielder who with the Pittsburgh Pirates hits the first home run in World Series history, passes away 116 years ago today in Williamsport.

Sebring’s historic homer comes off Cy Young – yes, that Cy Young – in the first game of the first Series game ever played on Oct. 1, 1903 in Boston.

Sebring leads both teams in the inaugural Series with a .333 batting average. He also hits Pittsburgh’s only home run as Boston wins the best-of-9 Series in eight games.

Sebring is only 27 in 1909 when he dies, a victim of kidney disease.
