Retiring No. 44

The Atlanta Braves 48 years ago today retire the iconic jersey No. 44 once belonging to Hank Aaron.

In doing so, Aaron becomes the first player to have his number retired by two teams.

The Milwaukee Brewers, with whom Aaron spends the final two seasons of his 23-year Hall of Fame career from 1954-76, previously retire Aaron’s No. 44.

Aaron spends nine of his 23 seasons in the majors with Atlanta; the other 14 in Milwaukee, either with the Braves from 1954-65 before their move to Atlanta and or with the Brewers from 1975-76.

Aaron hits 733 of his then-record 755 career home runs with the Braves, the other 22 with the Brewers.
