Rewarding ‘Mr. National’

Washington third baseman Ryan Zimmerman agrees 14 years ago today to a $100 million contract extension to remain with the Nationals through the 2019 season.

After that, he signs another one-year contract worth $2 million to stay with the Nationals through the 2020 season, although he eventually sits out the season due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

He returns in 2021 for a final season before retiring in February 2022.

His 16-year career in the majors includes 284 home runs in 1,799 games with 1,061 runs batted in, two All-Star Game selections, two Silver Slugger awards, one Gold Glove and one World Series title in 2019.

Along the way, and rightfully so, Zimmerman earns the nickname of “Mr. National.”
