The Harrisburg Alumni Association
Less than a month after becoming the fourth overall pick of baseball’s 2005 amateur draft, third baseman Ryan Zimmerman makes his Class AA debut and picks up three hits in an 8-6 victory over Akron 21 years ago today on Harrisburg's City Island.
Zimmerman quickly becomes one of the best prospects ever to play on the island, batting .326 in 63 games for the Senators before ending the 2005 season in the majors with the Washington Nationals.
Fourteen years later, Zimmerman is back on City Island in 2019 as part of his injury rehab assignment to get back to the majors with the Nationals.
Zimmerman sits out the 2020 season before returning to the Nationals in 2021 and eventually retiring after 16 seasons in the majors. His final totals include 284 homers in 1,799 games, two Silver Slugger awards, one All-Star Game selection and one Gold Glove.
