Beginning of the end

Today marks the 37th anniversary of baseball commissioner Peter Ueberroth announcing his investigation of Pete Rose, the game’s all-time hits leader who in 1989 is entering his sixth season as the Cincinnati Reds’ manager.

Ueberroth does not specify what he is investigating, but that soon becomes clear as Rose will receive a lifetime ban for betting on games.
