The 100-100 Club

The Philadelphia Phillies’ Jim Bunning holds Houston to one run over eight innings before struggling in the ninth and being bailed out by relievers Joe Hoerner and Dick Selma 56 years ago today for a 6-5 victory before a Tuesday night crowd of 18,184 at the Astrodome. ‍

The victory is Bunning's 100th in the National League, making him the first pitcher since Cy Young – yes, that Cy Young – to win 100 games in both the National and American leagues.

Al Orth – yes, that Al Orth, but you likely never heard of him – is a turn-of-the-20th-century pitcher who also wins 100 games in each league.

Since Bunning’s accomplishment in 1970, others reaching the 100-100 club are Fergie Jenkins, Gaylord Perry, Dennis Martinez, Nolan Ryan, Kevin Brown, Randy Johnson and Pedro Martinez.

Seven of the 10 – Orth, Brown and Dennis Martinez being the exceptions – are in the Hall of Fame.
