Onetime Harrisburg Senators and Montreal Expos outfielder Moises Alou signs a five-year, $25 million contract 29 years ago today with the Florida Marlins.
Alou drives in 115 runs during the 1997 regular season and another 15 in the playoffs to help the Marlins win the World Series.
Less than two months after winning the Series, though, the notoriously cheap Marlins trade Alou to the Houston Astros for three journeyman pitchers – Manual Barrios, Oscar Henriquez and Mark Johnson – who combine to appear in 18 games for Florida before moving on to other teams.
Alou goes on to play another 10 seasons in the majors before finishing his 17-year career with a .303 batting average, 332 home runs and six All-Star game appearances.
