The mark of excellence

The marker in the upper deck high above left field at old Shea Stadium, where 57 years ago today Mets leadoff hitter Tommie Agee becomes the only player to ever homer into the nether regions of the ballpark in Flushing Meadows.

Agee’s homer comes off Montreal left-hander Larry Jaster with two outs in the bottom of the second inning.

Agee homers again off Jaster in the seventh inning of the Mets’ 4-2 victory before a Thursday afternoon crowd of 8,608.

This one is a more pedestrian drive over the fence in left-center.

Estimated distance of Agee’s first homer: 505 feet, easily the longest homer hit in the Mets’ 45 seasons at Shea from 1964-2008.
