The running of Raines

Tim Raines

More than 30 years before his Hall of Fame induction in 2017, Tim Raines is in the midst of running through the National League at an unprecedented pace.

On this date in 1984, Raines – the Montreal Expos' leadoff hitter – steals four bases in a 7-4 victory at St. Louis to give him 70 for a fourth straight season, a major league record never reached by three of baseball's greatest basestealers – fellow Hall of Famers Rickey Henderson, Ty Cobb and Billy Hamilton.

Not slowing down, Raines steals exactly 70 bases both in 1985 and ’86 to extend his streak of 70 or more to six straight seasons.
