Time warp
Journeyman outfielder Cameron Maybin, then playing in only the second game of rookie season, hits his first major league home run 18 years ago today off Roger Clemens during Detroit’s 5-2 loss to Clemens and New York before a Saturday afternoon crowd of 54,802 at Yankee Stadium.
Normally, this might not register much interest outside of Maybin’s immediate family and friends.
Except that Maybin is all of 20 years old at the time when he homers off the 45-year-old Clemens – meaning that he has yet to be born in 1986, when Clemens wins the first of his record seven Cy Young Awards.
Let the chronological math on that one sink in for a minute.
And, oh, Maybin plays his final game in the majors in late May 2021 – a year before Clemens’ 26-year-old son Kody makes his debut there with Maybin’s former team in Detroit.
