Under the lights

The Philadelphia Phillies and Cincinnati Reds play the major leagues’ first night game 89 years ago tonight with the Reds winning 2-1 before a Friday evening crowd of 20,422 at Crosley Field.

The ceremonial first switch is thrown from the White House by President Franklin Roosevelt.

The Reds schedule six more night games in 1935, one against each of the National League’s other six teams.

For those with inquiring minds, Phillies second baseman Lou Chiozza is the game’s first batter against Reds right-hander Paul Derringer.

Chiozza promptly grounds out to Cincinnati shortstop Billy Myers.

Myers leads off the bottom of the first inning with a double to left field, the first hit recorded in a major league night game.

Philadelphia’s Lou Chiozza hits in the top of the first inning on May 24, 1935
