We like Ike! … Well, maybe not so much
The South Atlantic League’s Augusta Tigers announce 73 years ago today that they will change their name to their franchise to the Augusta Ikes in honor of Dwight Eisenhower, who back then is a day away from his inauguration as the 35th president.
Seems not everyone in Augusta, though, is a fan of the name change as the team goes by the Tigers from 1936 until the switch to recognize Eisenhower, who is best known as the Supreme Allied Commander during World War II and also by his nickname of Ike.
Three weeks later, the Ikes are no more as Augusta in early February 1953 once again changes its name, this time to the Rams.
Seems not everyone in Augusta is a fan of the Rams’ name, either, as the team in 1954 again switches back to the Tigers and keep it that way until the franchise folds after the 1958 season.
