The flight of Mickey Mantle’s homer in Detroit

During his Hall of Fame career, Mickey Mantle hits a lot of home runs for the New York Yankees.

A total of 536, to be exact.

Lots of them travel long distances, too. Some really long distances. ‍

And then there is the one the Mick hits 66 years ago today in Detroit

There, in front of a Saturday afternoon crowd of 10,815 at Tiger (nee Briggs) Stadium and, subsequently, to the amazement of some unsuspecting workers across the street, Mantle launches a three-run homer off Paul Foytack in the seventh inning.

The resulting shot off Mantle’s bat not only clears the roof in right field but also crosses Trumbull Avenue before landing next to a shed in the Brooks Lumber Yard.

The estimated distance is 643 feet. ‍

Oh, yeah, the Yankees win the game 5-1.
