Closer Al Reyes starts the Harrisburg Senators’ first triple play in their modern era 32 years ago today to end a 5-3 victory over the Bowie Baysox on City Island.
The play begins with Reyes snaring Bo Ortiz’s low liner up the middle and then throwing the ball to Mike Hardge, who tags second base to double up Brent Miller before relaying to first baseman Randy Wilstead to catch Hector Vargas and complete the 1-4-3, game-ending triple play.
“I don't know who said a double play is a pitcher’s best friend,” Senators starting pitcher J.J. Thobe says, “but a triple play is a helluva way to end a game.”
