Just another night game at Candlestick Park
Attorney Melvin Belli – the so-called “King of Torts” – takes on the San Francisco Giants 64 years ago today and wins a breach-of-contract lawsuit against the team.
Melvin Belli
Belli, a Giants season ticket holder, successfully argues the box seat he purchases in 1960 at Candlestick Park does not have, as he says the Giants promise, radiant heat.
Belli claims the seat, which costs him $1,597 for the season, is supposed to, well, keep his derriere warm during Candlestick’s famously cold summer nights.
In an unrelated matter, six years later in 1968, Belli is the guest star in a most forgettable episode in the original Star Trek called “And the Children Shall Lead.”
No one files a lawsuit during the filming of that dreadful episode, although fans of the classic sci-fi series may have grounds to sue Belli for entertainment malpractice.
