With the first overall pick of the 1979 amateur baseball draft, the Seattle Mariners select … Harrisburg High’s Al Chambers. That moment comes 47 years ago today for Chambers.

The hard-hitting outfielder tops a first round that includes future major league All-Stars Andy Van Slyke, Tim Wallach, Scott Garrelts, Atlee Hammaker and Steve Howe.

Chambers, though never gets a full opportunity to join them as an All-Star as injuries derail a career that lasts only parts of three seasons and 57 games in the majors with Seattle.
