Harping on a call

Bryce Harper chats with umpire Max Guyll (Chris Knight photo)

Well before he becomes a two-time National League Most Valuable Player, the enormously talented but sometimes quick-tempered outfielder Bryce Harper earns his first ejection in Class AA 14 years ago today.

Harper, then all of 18 years old and playing for the Harrisburg Senators, spikes his helmet after being called out on strikes by plate umpire Max Guyll in the seventh inning of the Senators’ 3-1 loss to Richmond on City Island.

Guyll ejects Harper before gravity returns the spiked helmet to the turf.

Replays show the pitch from Richmond’s Eric Surkamp is outside – a point Harper not-so-eloquently tries to make to Guyll before finding himself out of the game.
