Bill Mazeroski at Pittsburgh’s Forbes Field

Happy 89th birthday today to long-ago Pittsburgh Pirates second baseman Bill Mazeroski, the Hall of Famer best remembered for his Game 7 walkoff homer that ends the 1960 World Series against the heavily favored New York Yankees.

Often, and unfortunately, secondary in many conversations about Mazeroski is his brilliance in the field, where the 10-time National League All-Star and eight-time Gold Glove winner turns a major league-record 1,706 double plays during his career from 1956-72.

Not surprisingly, he leads the National League in assists nine times, putouts five times and range factor 10 times.
