Playing small ball
Today marks the 37th anniversary of Felix Fermin’s entry into the record books for something that few realize then or remember now as the Cleveland shortstop puts down four sacrifice bunts in a 3-2 victory over Seattle in 10 innings before a Tuesday night crowd of 12,565 at Municipal Stadium.
Fermin’s four bunts are the most in the majors since Ray Chapman, another Indians shortstop, picks up four sacrifices nearly 70 years ago to the day in another game played in Cleveland.
Fermin finishes the 1989 season with 32 sacrifice bunts to leads the major leagues, just as Chapman does in 1919 when he leads the majors with 50.
