Harrisburg Senators right-hander Bob Berresford no-hits Wilmington 1-0 in nine-inning game 74 years ago today, the last nine-inning no-hitter on City Island until Binghamton lefty Bill Pulsipher stymies the Senators 2-0 in Game 2 of the 1994 Class AA Eastern League finals.
Berresford – two days shy of his 22nd birthday – strikes out six, walks four and hits another batter with a pitch in throwing the Interstate League’s first no-hitter of the 1952 season.
Berresford also scores the game’s only run in the sixth inning as he improves his record to 3-2 before a Thursday night crowd of 600 on City Island.
The Senators’ first no-hitter of their modern era comes in 2003, when right-hander Seung Song beats Erie 2-1 on the island after a controversial scoring decision in the ninth inning.
In that game, Seung is charged with an error on a perfectly placed drag bunt by Erie’s Nook Logan in the ninth inning – despite the fact that Seung needs to run from the mound to the first-base line, make an extraordinary effort just to field the ball and then throw to first base.
The speedy Logan already passes first base before Song’s throw eventually arrives there.
“I think hit,” Seung says with a shrug after the game, “but they put error.” To which, Seung thinks, “Gamsa!” … or “Thanks!” in his native Korean. Looking for more to read? More than 3,600 archived posts may be found at Blog 3 — Baseball (and other cool stuff) … Enjoy!
