Smile, please

The 1915 Boston Red Sox take a moment out of spring training 111 years ago to pose for a team photo.

The Red Sox smile even more by the end of the 1915 season as they finish the summer by beating the Philadelphia Phillies in five games of the World Series.

In case you are wondering, the Boston player in the front row, fourth from the right, is a rookie pitcher by the name of George Ruth, who goes on to win 18 games that season.

Ruth eventually moves fulltime to the outfield, gets the cool nickname “Babe,” gets traded to the New York Yankees and forever changes baseball as one of its most dynamic power hitters.
