The 1987 Harrisburg Senators celebrate their championship 38 years ago today

The Harrisburg Senators sweep the Vermont Reds 3-2 and 5-1 in a day-night playoff doubleheader 38 years ago today on historic City Island to cap the inaugural season of their modern era.

The championship is the Senators’ first of six Class AA Eastern League titles in a 12-year span.

In beating the Reds, the Senators – in their first season of pro baseball since 1952 – deny Vermont a chance to win an EL-record fourth straight league title.

Coincidentally, the Senators 12 years later become the first – and so far only – team to win four straight championships when they cap off a magnificent four-year run from 1996-99.
