Philadelphia’s Shibe Park under the lights for the first time 87 years ago today

The American League’s first night game is played 87 years ago today in Philadelphia, where the Athletics fall to Cleveland 8-3 in 10 innings before a Tuesday crowd of 15,109 fans. ‍

An unseasonably cold, 54-degree May night in North Philly surely chases away others from seeing the historic game.

After Philadelphia pitcher Lynn Nelson works a 1-2-3 top of the first inning, the first American League hit under the lights comes in the bottom of the first on a one-out single by Sam Chapman to left field off Cleveland starter Al Milnar. ‍

Milnar works the first seven innings for Cleveland, allowing all three of Philadelphia’s runs before reliever Johnny Humphries works the final three innings and picks up the victory. ‍

Three walks, two hits and a couple of run-scoring groundouts fuel the Indians’ decisive five-run rally in the top of the 10th inning.
